Talk: Fr. John From the reading: John 15. 9-17 (NRSV) Easter VI Year B 9th May 2021

This gospel was revolutionary. “Love one another as I have loved you”. That was God talking.

2000 years ago when these words were dropped onto the disciples, it was a very cruel world. Yes, there were the Roman virtues of honour, of duty and service, but not love. Yes, there were Jewish virtues of purity, righteousness and obedience to God, but not love.  This command “to Love one another as I have loved you” cut through self interest, casual cruelty and hierarchy to set up a new way of living. God revealed Himself as Trinity, three persons in one God, bound by the bonds of love: reflecting this Truth, we are called to be a community bound in Love, so that for usmy joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete”

Love can be quite astringent: loving people doesn’t mean you like them all the time! But by being a loving family, we can be channels of God’s love to the world outside, and in these (please God!) soon-to-be-post Covid times , that is hugely important!
