A number of events have happened over the life of Holy Cross Church. From previous archives the following dates and information have been pulled together:
1291
In the valuation of Pope Nicholas there is a record of "A church at Buxted with a Chapel at Uckfield rated 48 marks".
1299
The first mention of a church ("a chale") in the Lambeth Register. it was a rectangular building about 29 feet x 60 feet - the size of and on the site of the present nave.
c1378
A bell tower and a chancel with an east window were added.
1839
The church was taken down (except for the tower and a small part of the south wall of the chancel) and rebuilt in 1840 by William Moseley. The height of the roofs and the tower were raised and the width of the nave doubled by the addition of two side aisles. A new slender spire was added to the tower. It was then dedicated to the Holy Cross.
1846
Uckfield became a separate parish, no longer being a chapel-of-ease to Buxted and sharing the same incumbent.
1865
Uckfield's own Perpetual Curate became a Rector.
1883
The Rectory in Belmont Lane was built. The pulpit was moved from the right hand side of the nave to the left.
1889
The Chancel was extended by 16 feet and the mediaeval window re-set in the new east end. The north porch was made into an organ chamber and the south porch a choir vestry. Later this was made into the chapel of the Sacred Passion of Christ. Box pews were in place until the late 1800's.
1892
The organ was dedicated on 10th February. One of only two built by Mr T Brooke, it was built over a shop in the High Street. It was originally installed on the gallery at the back of the church but later moved to its current position. It cost £450 and was first pumped by water, adapted to by hand in 1909 and eventually electricity. The organ has two manuals with pedal board, with twenty speaking stops and 1266 pipes.
1894
Four clock faces were installed.
1905
The bells (a peal of eight) were re-cast at Whitechapel Foundry.
1953
Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family worshipped here for the first time when staying in Uckfield.
1975
The Belfry was moved from the ground to the first floor in the Tower and the former Belfry made into a vestry.
1971
The organ was rebuilt.
1975-76
The lighting system was completely renewed.
1976
The Christchurch Chapel was created on the north side and named to commemorate the original Christchurch at Ridgewood from where the altar, altar rails and Angel window in front of the Reserved Sacrament came from. This chapel and the new lighting were dedicated in this year by the Right Rev. Timothy Bavin (former Curate at Holy Cross 1969-1971).
1979
The church was completely redecorated.
1987
The organ was restored at a cost of £8,500 large financed by a talent scheme organised by parishioners and re-dedicated.
The cedar tree in the churchyard (planted about 1846) came down in the October hurricane. A dovecote was made from the wood of that tree and erected in the Churchyard. However, this as since been removed.
1988
The grand piano was donated to the church, a Baby grand piano, maker Windover given by Simon Wright in memory of his parents.
2001
The East Window was totally restored. it was designed by Henry Holiday, one of the outstanding stained glass designers of the 19th Century. A dais was fitted, implemented by a "License to Experiment". The bells were restored. The Horsa Hut was demolished.
2002
The electrical system was renewed at a cost of £35,500. The
church was redecorated – walls a fresh white and the ceiling terracotta to
reflect the floor tiles. The lighting was also enhanced with spotlights and
dimming facilities. A service in Celebration and in Thanksgiving for the Reordering, Re-wiring and
Re-decoration of the Church, with the dedication of a new Altar for the dais, Candlesticks,
Kneeler Cushions, East Window and Eucharistic Vestments was held on Sunday 26th
May 2002. Windows were repaired.
2004
The
sound system upgraded including an up to date loop system.
2005
The West corner entrance was reorganised making it a welcoming area with
storage cupboards and a new notice board.
Wooden interior doors replaced with etched glass doors to enlarge and
improve the welcome area.
2007
The Festival of Christmas Trees first held.
2009
13th September – opening of The Belmont Centre (formerly Church
Centre)
2011
The clock was cleaned and overhauled and fitted with automatic winding to
replace the twice weekly task of hand winding the clock. An automatic regulator and a clock strike
night silencer was also fitted. This cost £4.990. The repainting of the clock
faces and regilding of the hands and numbers (costing approx. £3,500) also took
place with people invited to sponsor a minimum of £20 a numeral and £50 a hand
or £150 a clock face. It was rededicated on 16th February 2012 by
the Rt Revd Dr John Hind, Bishop of Chichester.
2013
Health and safety improvements made with the installation of fire exit signs
and a fire bell. A fund had been set up to buy new pew cushions for the pews downstairs and the
last of the pew cushions were purchased this year. Hand rails were installed from the dais to the pulpit and on the outer side of
the staircases leading from the ground floor to the balcony.
2015
New Memorial Garden dedicated by the Bishop of Lewes on 30th
September
2017
New church boiler installed – while this happened Sunday services took place in
The Belmont Centre.
2018
Bechstein Rosewood "V" Grand Piano was purchased.
2019
The front two pews in the centre put on wheels making them mobile so that more
space can be given at the front of the nave for things like Holiday Club and
concerts.
2020
Covid pandemic causes in-person services to be stopped. Church was closed for a number of months.
2024
Cardale Chapel -in
August 2024, following water damage from the roof and as the result of an
insurance claim, the walls and ceiling were repaired and redecorated including
re-gilding the gold detailing across the whole roof area. The colour used for
the walls and ceiling (the walls were formerly maroon) is the same as the body
of the church making it look much brighter and cleaner. The wood panelling was
cleaned and repolished. The stained glass window was also cleaned.
In the October a Children’s Area was created within the church as up till then there was no evidence of thriving children’s work.
2025
New carpets were installed on the dais, High Altar, Christchurch Chapel and entrance area at the back of the church.
