A number of events have happened over the life of Holy Cross Church.  From previous archives the following dates and information have been pulled together:

1291
In the valuation of Pope Nicholas there is a record of "A church at Buxted with a Chapel at Uckfield rated 48 marks".

1299
The first mention of a church ("a chale") in the Lambeth Register.  it was a rectangular building about 29 feet x 60 feet - the size of and on the site of the present nave.

c1378
A bell tower and a chancel with an east window were added.

1839
The church was taken down (except for the tower and a small part of the south wall of the chancel) and rebuilt in 1840 by William Moseley.  The height of the roofs and the tower were raised and the width of the nave doubled by the addition of two side aisles.  A new slender spire was added to the tower.  It was then dedicated to the Holy Cross.

1846
Uckfield became a separate parish, no longer being a chapel-of-ease to Buxted and sharing the same incumbent.

1865
Uckfield's own Perpetual Curate became a Rector.

1883
The Rectory in Belmont Lane was built.  The pulpit was moved from the right hand side of the nave to the left.

1889
The Chancel was extended by 16 feet and the mediaeval window re-set in the new east end.  The north porch was made into an organ chamber and the south porch a choir vestry.  Later this was made into the chapel of the Sacred Passion of Christ.  Box pews were in place until the late 1800's.

1892
The organ was dedicated on 10th February.  One of only two built by Mr T Brooke, it was built over a shop in the High Street.  It was originally installed on the gallery at the back of the church but later moved to its current position.  It cost £450 and was first pumped by water, adapted to by hand in 1909 and eventually electricity.  The organ has two manuals with pedal board, with twenty speaking stops and 1266 pipes.

1894
Four clock faces were installed.

1905
The bells (a peal of eight) were re-cast at Whitechapel Foundry.

1953
Queen Elizabeth and other members of the Royal Family worshipped here for the first time when staying in Uckfield.

1975
The Belfry was moved from the ground to the first floor in the Tower and the former Belfry made into a vestry.

1971
The organ was rebuilt.

1975-76
The lighting system was completely renewed.

1976
The Christchurch Chapel was created on the north side and named to commemorate the original Christchurch at Ridgewood from where the altar, altar rails and Angel window in front of the Reserved Sacrament came from.  This chapel and the new lighting were dedicated in this year by the Right Rev. Timothy Bavin (former Curate at Holy Cross 1969-1971).

1979
The church was completely redecorated.

1987
The organ was restored at a cost of £8,500 large financed by a talent scheme organised by parishioners and re-dedicated.

The cedar tree in the churchyard (planted about 1846) came down in the October hurricane.  A dovecote was made from the wood of that tree and erected in the Churchyard.  However, this as since been removed.

1988
The grand piano was donated to the church.

2001
The East Window was totally restored.  it was designed by Henry Holiday, one of the outstanding stained glass designers of the 19th Century.  A dais was fitted, implemented by a "License to Experiment".  The bells were restored.  The Horsa Hut was demolished.

2002
The electrical system was renewed at a cost of £35,500.  The church was totally redecorated.  Windows were repaired.  Altar for the new dais.

2020
