At Holy Cross Church, there will be several services across the month which follow the Order of Evening Prayer using the Book of Common Prayer.  This service is often referred to as Evensong. Please see The Grapevine for details of services.  These services are often sung with the Choir.  To see our Order of Service, please click here.

Choral Evensong

45 minutes of perfect peace.  Evensong is a service sung almost entirely by the choir. Reflect, listen, and contemplate this song sung at the even point between the active day and the restful night.  Evensong is free of charge, free from religious obligation, and has been so for nearly five centuries.  Music heard at Evensong could have been composed 500 years ago, or yesterday.  It is a living tradition to which all are welcome.

Choral Evensong appeals to many for its combination of beautiful music, a serene atmosphere, and a ritualistic structure that offers solace and spiritual enrichment. It's particularly attractive for its anonymity, accessibility, and opportunity for quiet reflection, making it a popular choice for those seeking a more individual and less demanding form of worship.

Choral Evensong is a religious service, primarily associated with the Anglican tradition, that features a choir singing composed settings of psalms, canticles, hymns and anthems. It's a sung form of Evening Prayer, typically held in cathedrals and churches. The service includes scripture readings and prayers, with the congregation often participating in listening and some responses.

Evensong is drawn almost entirely from the Bible. Much of the language spoken and sung in this service is that spoken by worshippers more than four hundred years ago.  It might sound old-fashioned, but it's meaning is not out of date.  We invite you to allow the music and words to speak to you in the beauty of our church.
